Manuel wins Britain's highest award for aviation

Last year, Manuel Queiroz flew solo around the world in just 39 days in a single-engine aeroplane, becoming the first and only pilot to circumnavigate the globe in a British-registered homebuilt aircraft. On 24th April 2007, Manuel's fantastic achievement was recognised by the Royal Aero Club of the United Kingdom, when the Club's President, HRH The Duke of York presented him with the Britannia Trophy, one of the world's greatest aviation awards. The ceremony took place at the Royal Air Force Club in Piccadilly, London.

Manuel's name has now been added to the distinguished list of aviators who have previously been awarded this trophy including, among others, Sir John Alcock, the first person to fly non-stop across the Atlantic in 1919; Sir Alan Cobham, pioneer of long-distance flying and knighted for his many contributions to aviation; Alex Henshaw MBE, WW2 Spitfire test pilot, who set the world record for a return flight to Cape Town in 1939 which still stands today and Worcester-born pilot Sheila Scott, the first person to fly over the North Pole in a single engine aircraft.

In addition, since his return from his solo round the world flight in April 2006, Manuel has been awarded the following accolades:

  • Flyer Magazine 'Pilot of the Year 2006'
  • The Popular Flying Association's trophy for Navigation 2006.
  • A new British speed record for circumnavigation of the globe in a single engine aircraft under 1000 kg, officially recognised by the Royal Aero Club.
  • Six diplomas from the FAI (Fédération Aéronautique Internationale), the world governing body for sporting aviation, confirming his setting of six new world speed records for aviation.
  • Admitted as a member of the 'Earthrounders', one of the world's most exclusive clubs.
